A home cook seeking the perfect food-safe container for brining a turkey faces a common dilemma: finding a large enough vessel without risking contamination from non-food-grade materials. With pre-brined turkeys available but a desire to experiment with homemade brining, the challenge lies in securing a sturdy, spill-proof container that accommodates an average-sized bird while leaving room for brine without compromising safety. The search highlights the need for practical, food-safe alternatives to repurposed household items like mop buckets, which may lack proper sealing or cleanliness for culinary use. Practical solutions could include specialized brining bags or large, food-grade plastic bins designed for meat preparation.

question is in the subject, but last thanksgiving, i had the idea of taking a turkey and brining it for thanksgiving, but we didn't have a container on hand to put it in and "brine" it in. i mean, we do have a few old (and big) buckets we used in the past for mopping, but no liners or lids to said buckets. and even if we did find liners and a lid for one of them, i'd rather not use them for food related reasons so i'd like to know, which size food-safe container would be reasonably big enough to hold an average sized butterball turkey with just enough free-space leftover where there should be no brine/liquid spillage? (yes i know some of these turkeys are already pre-brined, but i'd still want to give it a shot at one point regardless) Edit: should've posted an example, my bad. basically, any container like this is the "style" that i'd be looking for submitted by /u/BrokeToken25 [link] [comments]
