I’ve been researching what people actually ate on the American prairie, and it’s not what most of us picture. Sure, they had food from the garden, corn, and a lot of beans. But one thing they made for winter was pemmican.
I’ve been researching what people actually ate on the American prairie, and it’s not what most of us picture. Sure, they had food from the garden, corn, and a lot of beans. But one thing they made for winter was pemmican. This was taught to them by Native Americans. It’s dried meat with dried fruit pounded into it. Sounds like a sweetish beef jerky. Restaurants in the 1880s had side dishes like stewed prunes, boiled beets, and parched corn (kind of burnt corn). And people were glad to have it! submitted by /u/chuckmall [link] [comments]
