Food enthusiasts, rejoice: the search is on for the perfect Korean-style lettuce salad, also known as "Sangchu Geotjeori." A Reddit user recently shared a delicious-sounding recipe from their Korean BBQ experience, but it fell short of expectations when attempted at home. The dish's signature spicy and slightly sweet flavors, enhanced by the unmistakable taste of sesame oil, have left one cook wondering if they're missing a crucial ingredient. Some speculate that the missing piece may be mirin, a sweet Japanese cooking wine often used in Korean cuisine, or perhaps gojugaru, a Korean chili flake commonly used in spicy dishes. Can anyone help crack the code and provide a recipe that captures the authentic flavors of this beloved Korean side dish?
Went out for Korean bbq (9292 in Northern Virginia) last week and one of the side dishes was this delicious lettuce salad with spicy slightly sweet sauce. I could taste sesame oil as well. I tried making this recipe (https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/sangchu-geotjeori) but to me it felt like gojugara wasn't right. The texture was not the same and I thought it would have used gojujang but I haven't found a single recipe using that instead of chili powder. Taste was also missing the sweetness. One of the other people in my group said they thought there was mirin in it. Does anybody have a recipe? Pic of half eaten salad submitted by /u/avpunresponsive [link] [comments]
