When I do parties for more than 2 or 3 friends, I go for a buffet of finger foods, basically. Pieces of sausages, ham, and cheeses; crackers; hummus and cut-up pita; carrots and celery sticks and dips; nuts and dates. I've seen similar layouts at other parties, or office caterings. But I don't know what to call it. Hors d'oeuvres seems closest, but I feel implies more assembly by the host (plus I hate trying to spell it). Canapes is savoury-on-cracker, which my guests might make with the materials, but I don't. Charcuterie is specific to meats... ...oh, hrm, Wikipedia says American English uses "charcuterie board" for more or less what I'm describing. I guess that's probably my best bet for a short description. That, or "buffet of finger foods". Otherwise, it's kind of like charcuterie (meats)+ cheese board + crudites (veggies) + some other finger food (hummus, chips, dates...) submitted by /u/rainbowrobin [link] [comments]
