A household discovered a heavily mold-covered bag of unidentified sausage left forgotten on top of a refrigerator, with the mold having seeped into and permanently stained a wooden food tray underneath. The family was shocked by the extent of the mold growth and the apparent neglect, leading them to confront the stepfather, who claimed the sausages were expensive specialty items shipped for curing. Upon inspection, the stepfather acknowledged the mold as part of the traditional curing process, though the family remained baffled by how the food was left unattended for so long. The incident highlights concerns over food safety and proper storage practices in the home.
A few weeks ago, I was doing some cleaning around the house and was looking for our food tray that we use to hold our food when we want to eat in our rooms. While looking for it, I stumbled upon it on top of the refrigerator with an old Target bag on it. I go to grab it and immediately notice there’s a good amount of weight on it as I’m trying to slide it out. When I finally get it down, the first thing I notice is a large black and blue substance leaking from all around the bag. This was very obviously mold. Mold of all different kinds of colors. Immediately, I begin to gag. I start thinking, what could possibly be in this bag to cause such a buildup of mold? I take the leap of faith and take a peek inside the bag, and I find some type of sausage. I could not identify the type of sausage that was in the bag. I immediately pinch a “non-tainted” part of the bag and throw it in the trash, but leave it open to show my mom. Then I turn back and notice that the mold leaked through the bag and stained the tray I was originally looking for. I then start to give it a good, soapy cleaning. As I’m scrubbing, the stain does not seem to come off at all. THE MOLD WAS THERE FOR SO LONG, IT SEEPED INTO THE WOOD OF THE TRAY AND IS IN THERE PERMANENTLY!! I immediately yell out to my mother to ask for answers because who could just leave something like that on top of the fridge and forget about it? She comes down and I show her the bag of sausage. She immediately suspects my stepdad is to blame. We take a few pictures, throw out the bag, and wait until my stepdad comes home so we can ask why he would buy sausages just to leave them and forget about them. About 30 minutes later, he’s home and we confront him. My stepdad, immediately upon hearing the news, storms outside to investigate the moldy sausage that we had thrown out. When he comes back, he angrily explains that it was $200 worth of sausage that he had shipped to us. The mold is a natural part of the curing process. I immediately start second-guessing what I did by throwing out his sausage. How could I have known the sausage was supposed to be like that? He stubbornly leaves and refuses to answer any more questions. I’m just stuck here because I do not know if I was in the wrong for throwing out the sausages. Can someone help me understand if I messed up? I will try to add a picture, but it can be gross to look at. Warning. Sausage submitted by /u/LuicferFW [link] [comments]
